fishing for snapper in port phillip bay most people use a twin rig as its the best type of rig to use , but over the last season i have been testing a technique , i call pop & drop where i fish a paternoster rig or flasher rig with a heavy sinker , The way in which i use this rig is , i fish the rig allot like a lure and i dont anchor , i will use my sounder to find the fish and then reverse back up over the fish and drop the rig down on top of them alot like lure fishing but the difference is i can have my rig down on the bottom where the fish is in 3 to 4 seconds as there is no resistance in the free fall. When your sounding fish on your sounder if you think about when you see the fish on the sounder its more then likely moving under your boat as there is very little strutcher or reef for the fish to sit on in the bay. The fish could be swim in any direction and you really dont know so this where you need to be on the bottom within a few seconds to give your self a good chance to catch it when you perfect it its truely magic as you can be hooked up within seconds of seeing the fish on your sounder
having a bait in a grazing snappers face with in a few seconds something that is not possible with a twin rig or siding sinker with the common port phillip rig as its just to light and helicopters down
i must say its my favourite way to fish port phillip it may not be the best but it sure is fun and takes alot skill to perfect and you get a great deal of satisfaction knowing you truely caught the fish on your sounder .
