Best Way To Fish Snapper Rigs & How To Bait Circle Hooks
When Fishing with Circle Hooks One of the Most important things is to make Sure your Hook Is Baited Correctly. Whether youre Fishing With Pilchard Or Fresh Squid Or What ever your bait is If it Isnt hooked Right Your Chances of Catching a Fish Decline . First you need Your bait to sit in the current straight as in the picture below if it's spinning and Looks Unnatural you Have less chance of Getting A Bite . Snapper for example grab the bait by the head first, run with it and then swallow the bait. So it is very important to have the point of the circle hook fully exposed when baiting and using circle hooks. No Matter what brand of hook or rig you are fishing from Gamakatsu Owner Mustard or a Paternoster Snapper Snatcher's Or a Running snelledRig Its Super important to take the time to do it Correctly. If you Watch the Above Video You Will See how i use circle hooks to catch Some Nice Australian Snapper .

Melbourne Snapper 2015 September with Big reds on my mind i Launched my boat at mornington . Drove out to the Shipping channel and started sounding up for some snapper .The burometer was extremley high peaking at 1039 and was not to concerned about tide changes . I Knew if i put the effort in and could find the fish i would be a great chance of catching and coming home with an earley season snapper . I sounded for about half an hour and found 1 decent looking arch. I decided to anchor just up wind of the fish . I was a bit concerned about getting smashed be small flathead so my baits were large supa pillchard and silver whiting hopfelly keeping the small fish away from my baits . Anchored and put my spread of fishing rods Out . burley up with a combonation of fish pellets and tuna oil . we had a quick bbq up the front of the boat (while keeeping our eyes glued to the rods) After about 20 mins the fishing rod buckled over and i found myself hook up to the what i think is the first red of the season stoked !!! . But just 30 seconds into the fight the fish threw the hooks . Some what still confident i would get another go at a snapper and sure enough two mins later the other rod bent over and i was hooked up again to a nice port phillip bay earley snapper .The fish gear combo i used to catch this 90cm red was a Shimano sienna 4000 reel spooled with 20lb line with a Shimano sonic Pro 6-8 kg fishing rod pretty light gear for snapper but thats just how i fish . the fishing rig i was using a sliding rig by Reedy's rigz Snelled 5/0 Hooks (not there Flasher Rigs ) but they are good two .The new 6/0 Model is Awersome .
I leave link to the fishing gear used to stop this snapper below . Enjoy and best of luck fishing this snapper season .

Snapper Flasher Rigs That Are pre-tied fishing rigs , but they are not your typical rig . Flasher Rigs Ship in a selection of Hook sizes and Lure colours, integrated with Circle hooks. That is Pre- tied on tough 60lb or 80lb Leader in a paternoster Setting. To the benifit from the rigs is the fish Lure fabric connected to theCircle hooks. Each hook is Rigged by lavish flavouring, much like a fly you would use Trout Fishing. There is also a luminous bead on top of each Circle hook.Which Also attracted Fish in the Deep water. Fishing -Snapper Fishing Tackle's Flasher rigs.-
Reedy's Fishing rigs can be used for surf fishing also. This is one of the most novel uses for Snapper Flasher rigs. For starters, it's just so easy. Tie the swivel at one end of Snapper Flasher rig to your main line, and attach a Bell sinker to the other. Boom! You're fishing! . they're very, effective in the surf. I have caught many Australian Salmon from the surf on Snapper flasher, and I know that fishermen who use them more regularly also catch other species like Gummy Sharks, Reef Fish, Mulloway and many more fish. List of potential target species is endless. Any time you are fishing with bait you could increase your success rate by using Snapper flasher instead of just bare hooks.

Collecting Bait Is easy with Cheap plastic squid lure Skirted lures are an awesome way to catch smaller Pelagic fish. Not only do you get the satisfaction of rigging the lure itself and how it trolls, I believe they are far more affective then trolling other surface lures such as hard bodied lures or metal slugs. For example they will not foul up if trolled through weed and also it's a lot harder for a fish to throw a single hook then a treble when trolling for Salmon, Tailor, Bonito and other smaller Pelagic fish. This is just my opinion and my approach when trolling surface lures. My favourite brands are still Shimano, Daiwi, Rapala, Penn and many of the other big name companies, but I tend to stay away from the big priced " lures" when it isn't necessary.
I have learnt over many years that these more expensive lures are not as good for surface trolling for small Pelagic fish, although I still stick with the big brands for other things like reels, rods, combo's and lures (when needed for other applications e.g. diving lures, etc). Selecting Lure colour's and size's what you need to rig up these lures . skirted plastic squid lure, Ball sinker size 1 , some leader around 1.5 long 40lb , a hook that's will suit the size of fish you are targeting . Lures My Favourite Brands
Selecting Lure colour's and size's
I am no expert but when I select a lure colour I tend to keep it simple.
I don't see the need to do it any other way as I feel it's just over complicating the whole process and I know there would be plenty of fisherman that disagree with my way of thinking, but until I stop catching fish it will stay this way.
I believe there are generally two things that smaller Pelagic eat and that's bait fish or squid. Then the next thing you take in to consideration is the water colour (e.g. if it's clear or dirty). I could sit here and write many things about colours and times of days to use different colours but I won't because I don't feel the need, but feel free to research it yourself on the internet.
When I think of Salmon, Tailor, Bonito or Barracuda and all Pelagic fish, I tend to compare them to grey hounds at a race track chasing a rabbit on a lure!! They're stupid and so are most smaller Pelagic fish, the more respect you pay them the harder they are to hook. If you're not catching fish, chances are it's something else, like you're in the wrong area or the fish are simply not feeding. I tend to believe that you are in the wrong area as the Pelagic are natural predators and take most opportunities to get a feed.
So after all my mumbo jumbo I would opt to select some bright colours for when the water is murky and some natural colours (such as blues, whites, brown's) that look like a pilchard, or other baitfish or squid when the water is clear.
If I am unsure of the size of the baitfish/squid in the area I am fishing, I would generally choose a 7cm to 10cm skirted lure as a good all rounder for small pelagic fish. It will just depend on the size of baitfish or squid in your area you fish as to the size of the lure you need. Keep your eyes open and you will see the baitfish if you look hard enough. Once you spot them, estimate the size and select your skirt, if you can't see any just refer back to the 10cm size.
When you look at skirted lures or any lure for that matter you may think to yourself skirts or some other lures look nothing like a bait fish or squid? But the fact is when the lure is moving or trolling at speed past a Pelagic, the fish will only see it cruise by and get a glimpse only seeing a blur and in that split second the predator pelagic has to make a decision and choose if it wants dinner or not. With mother nature's gift to all predatorily pelagic fish its natural instinct will be to eat your lure more times than not.
Cut some leader/Trace( fishing line ) about 1.5 meters. Around 40lb should keep you out of trouble and be strong enough for most fish , it will also track better behind the boat with thinner line . next tie your swivel to one end of leader .
Step 1
Step 2
Stuff the ball sinker up the lure so when your trolling it stays on the topwater .
lumo beads to keep the hook back near the tail of the lure by adding as many lumo beads as you require you want the hook gap to be just sitting just out of the back of the tail . the skirt should slide up and down the fishing line and swivel will stop it at the other end .

A DIFFERNT WAY TO FISH FOR SNAPPER IN PORT PHILLIP BAY WITH PATERNOSTER RIGS
fishing for snapper in port phillip bay most people use a twin rig as its the best type of rig to use , but over the last season i have been testing a technique , i call pop & drop where i fish a paternoster rig or flasher rig with a heavy sinker , The way in which i use this rig is , i fish the rig allot like a lure and i dont anchor , i will use my sounder to find the fish and then reverse back up over the fish and drop the rig down on top of them alot like lure fishing but the difference is i can have my rig down on the bottom where the fish is in 3 to 4 seconds as there is no resistance in the free fall. When your sounding fish on your sounder if you think about when you see the fish on the sounder its more then likely moving under your boat as there is very little strutcher or reef for the fish to sit on in the bay. The fish could be swim in any direction and you really dont know so this where you need to be on the bottom within a few seconds to give your self a good chance to catch it when you perfect it its truely magic as you can be hooked up within seconds of seeing the fish on your sounder
having a bait in a grazing snappers face with in a few seconds something that is not possible with a twin rig or siding sinker with the common port phillip rig as its just to light and helicopters down
i must say its my favourite way to fish port phillip it may not be the best but it sure is fun and takes alot skill to perfect and you get a great deal of satisfaction knowing you truely caught the fish on your sounder .

USING THE CIRCLE HOOKS TO CATCH A BIG SNAPPER
The circle hooks, are designed to hook the fish in the corner of the mouth as it takes the bait and moves away. Striking at bites will only pull the hooks from the
red’s mouth, so it is imperative not to strike. If holding the rod while surf fishing, don’t start fighting the fish until you’re sure the fish is well hooked. If
boat fishing, put the rod in a rod holder, low to the water, then sit back and wait for the fish to hook themselves. Don’t even touch the rod until there is a strong,
sustained bend in the rod and/or line is pouring from the reel. It’s a hard habit to break, but it’s important. A great way to fish for snapper with Reedys rig’s is
directly to the bottom, beneath the boat . Rocking of the boat gives the rigs some up and down action, which lures the fish. It doesn’t matter whether you use your
Snapper Snatchers in conjunction with a braid or mono mainline. You will get excellent hook up rates with both .
Snapper Snatchers and flasher rigs used to catch early season reds
I believe in early Snapper season in Melbourne. Although the reds don't feed as much while the water temperature is still low, I have found that smaller baits can be the key to your success in those earlier months (September and October). In Victoria the maximum amount of rods you can use at one time is 4. On the spread I will rig 2 snapper snatchers and 2 traditional snelled hooks. When I fish for Snapper I always fish with atleast 1 snatcher rig in combination with my sounder to gage if I am in the right area. For example, if I am catching lots of Flathead on the snatcher flasher fly rig I tend to pull up the anchor, turn on the sounder and leave as I believe if the flathead are on the bite, I am in the wrong fishing spot as I have personally noticed the flathead shut down when the Snapper are in the area. So I will use the sounder to look elsewhere for the Snapper.
In November when the school fish move in, I use snapper snatchers because I find they are easy to drop straight down and are much easier to bait up. When your burley up with pilchard chunks, the same sized chunks are what I use on the Snapper snatchers so I find it saves time when the snapper are going ballistic.
Whatever rigs you use when fishing, I highly recommend you have atleast one flasher rig (snapper snatcher) on your spread as it will improve your chances of catching Snapper.
