Australia is an angler’s paradise.

There are more than 85,000 recreational fishers in Australia. Most Australians live by the sea, and there’s plenty of fish available for everyone. You can see why fishing is such a popular hobby over here.

The Snapper is my personal favourite. Called as the Australasian Snapper, this marine fish is generally found in coastal and offshore waters. They are available throughout the year especially in southern Queensland and South to Central WA.

You can catch the snapper in the wild by a variety of methods such as trawling, handlines, longlines, and gillnets. But the one I like the best are the pre-tied fishing rigs from Reedy’s Rigzs.

There’s a lot of talk about the snapper rigs from Reedy’s Rigzs among the charter operators here, and I’ve heard stories of how easy this tool makes it to catch not such the snapper fish, but also the Australian salmon, tailor, gummy sharks and mulloway.

 What’s so Special about Reedy’s Rigzs?

Well, to begin with, these are the best snapper rigs I’ve used in a long, long time. Reedy’s Rigz are really effective when you’re fishing from boats. I, for one, have caught snapper and school sharks and a variety of other species with them.

You will be far more successful when you use the pre-made rigs from Reedy’s Rigz than with only bare hooks. These rigs are best suited to waters where there’s enough current to wash them around. Let’s talk a bit more about how Reedy’s Rigz work.

How Do Reedy’s Rigz Work?

What are Reedy’s Rigz? They are essentially pre-tied fishing rigs. They come in many different colours and sizes, but I suggest going for the 6/0 hooks if you’re fishing for the snapper.

They consist of two extremely sharp circle style hooks, which are to a hard trace material in the paternoster style. These rigs are so good because of the fish-attracting material tied to the hooks.

 Each hook is covered by a lot of flashy dressing and made to resemble a saltwater fly. You even have a glowing bead above the hooks, which gives it a perfect fly-like look, which attracts the fish to it.

You can use it along with bait or use it as the bait; it works either way. But it always makes sense to sweeten up the Reedy’s Rigz hooks with a small bait. I recommend a strip of squid for this – just pass the hook through the end of the strip once, just as for any ordinary circle hook. Make sure not to cover the gape of the hook with too much bait.

Fishing with Reedy’s Rigz

Fishing with Reedy’s Rigz is a real pleasure.  Once you’re done with fixing the rigs and baits, put the rod in the rod holder, as low to the water as possible.

Now, lower the Reedy’s Rigz rigs directly to the bottom, just beneath the boat. The rocking action of the boat gives the rigs a proper up and down action, which attracts the snapper fish.

The rigs are designed in a way to bait the fish and hook it at the corner of its mouth. The hook gets pulls the fish in even as it tries to get away.

Whatever you do, don’t strike at the fish, as that would only pull the hook from the mouth of the fish. You can pull the fish in only when you are sure that it has been properly hooked.

Trust me; the fish simply hook themselves, you don’t even have touch the rod for the most part – unless you notice a strong bend in the rod for some reason.

Melbourne to Lake Elidion Trout Fishing Father Son Getaway Trip Accomod...

Just after 3.30 am on a very cold late June morning. Brett intended to bring his young son along so he quietly sneaked into his room and whisked him away from his slumber to awaiting child seat in a cold vehicle that had him swiftly turned into a wide eyed possum starring into spotlights. We were ready for departure to Lake Eildon some 150 km away.  We had travelled about an hour with the boat in tow from Melbourne, the car temp sensor reading minus 1 degrees Celsius. Suddenly through the hills just before Eildon we spotted a couple Samba Dear to our delight and amazement. We finally arrived at Lake Eildon in the black of night in amongst the forest with only a few lights on and a flashing white light from a houseboat reflecting off the lake telling us that  we were near the water. We jumped out of the car and started prepping the boat for launch, gee it was cold but that didn’t faze Brett as he was in his shorts as always rain hail or shine summer or winter he lives with them always on, I scratch my head in disbelief as i had my long Johns and jeans two jumpers a jacket and a coat and could still feel the cold…..he did have a coat jacket though. The Sun's first light was breaking through the hills as we slid the boat in and we could now make sense of our surroundings, the hills ringed half way up with low level cloud and the lake had a misty fog rising from it which made for an eerie feel and a groovy sight. Surveying the area at Jerusalem Creek where the houseboats are and where we would be staying on a boatel where we could birth the boat to it, but that was for later as check in was at around 2pm. Instead there was fishing to be had lots of it. We sped out to Big river where the fish were said to be on the go so we rigged 4 rods with trolling lures 2 of the Tassie devils type and 1 with a Gold bomber and the last with a bibbed trout imitation shallow diver. We worked the tree line edges of the banks for hours we seen plenty fish breaking the surface and some breaching it with jumps but none taking the lures we changed colours of the Tassie Devils  but still to no avail. As we traversed up the Big river we came around a bend to see a lone boater working large lures along a rock wall our timing couldn’t have been better as he hooked up in front of us fighting what seemed to be a large fish, by the time he landed it we had travelled away from him but I managed to glimpse what seemed a large paddle tail and a conclusion that it probably was a Murray cod lucky bloke. It brought some excitement and new hope to our foray in landing a fish although we weren't targeting Cod. Some nice trout would do us just fine, a half hour had passed when one of the rods went off after trolling for nearly 2 hours it was a small Rainbow trout which wasn’t worth filming or keeping so back it went  another 3 were caught but again too small so all were released unharmed, after 3 and half to 4 hours of trolling it was time for lunch. We found a landing to a camp ground on a hill where we beached the boat and trekked up the hill to the site where a rota loo had been installed and a couple fire pits placed inground to boil a billy or cook up a storm if required. We though had a portable gas stove and had some snaggs to cook on it. The view of the area up on the hill with the Sun now shining and blue skies all-around looking down to the lake was awe inspiring. Brett perked up and said he would like to camp up there but after that cold morning I was more reluctant and erred on more warmer months maybe or the boatel again for me. With lunch over it was time to troll our way back to the boatelto check in, no more fish took our lures on the way back so we reeled them in to make haste on time to check in. We passed the lone boater still working the same rock wall  where we had seen him bring up the probable Cod maybe it was paying dividends for him and was a prime spot for them. As we turned another corner we seen 2 guys in a tinny rowing I thought that’s strange as they had there rods sticking out and looked as though they were trolling but on further examination and with consultation with Brett we realised there was something wrong so we steered closer to them and asked if all was well, to them replying they had run out of fuel and the time was around 2pm and for them to have rowed back to Jerusalem Creek we estimated it probably would be sometime after 12 -1am  before they got backfrom where they were so we offered them a tow in for which they were grateful. We got in some half an hour later and with just a thanks and no reward they asked for release some 100 meters from shore and would row the rest of the way in, they got to their car loaded the tinny on their trailer and were of like a shot. Brett and I looked at each other and laughed as we had birthed to the boatel and were onlookers to their happenings, for us it was time to relax and refresh. We unloaded our gear for the overnight stay, Brett wanted to do some more fishing as he had nothing on film for the video so he took his son out again and worked the side opposite to the boatel were there was no traffic of boats. After another hour he returned without success and called it a night we baited some rods and cast them from the balcony of the boatel for a night session with bells on the rods to inform us of any bite whilst we had dinner and watched Tv. Next morning we got up 6.30am and nothing had taken our baits so we grabbed the rods got in the boat and returned to the same area to make amends for yesterday, we only had a few hours to work with as check out was 10 am and we had to return to Melbourne.  We trolled the same Big River section of lake Eildon but this time the opposite side banks, we hadn't trolled long before we got a strike on a Tassie devil lure bringing in a nice Brown trout very silvery in colour and those spots on its sides a beautiful looking specimen. Soon after we had another strike on this occasion it took the gold bomber lure and again a Brown trout  this one was larger Brett did say that the gold bomber would catch the bigger fish and this just proved that. We did catch another 2 more fish of the rainbow type but they too like the day previous were of very small size unworthy of filming so they were released immediately our session and our sojourn to Lake Eildon had come to an end as we had to return to our boatel to pack up and return the keys. All in all it was a memorable couple days were we caught fish and took a couple of fish for a feed too. The beautiful scenic trip through the hills back to Melbourne awaited us..
