Stormy Fishing Conditions - Early Season Snapper

Tackle Western Port

In Westernport you’re constantly dealing with fast moving water. often you come across big Stingrays sharks and various other fish.
so it’s important to have the right tackle. when targeting fish such as snapper. I like to run a fishing combo of 6 to 10 kilos not because I can’t catch a snapper on the lighter gear.

I’ve used a lot of fishing rod combos over the years and I find you better off spending a little bit of extra money and having some quality tackle that will large longer rather than buying cheap stuff that breaks and it’s not going to get the job done.
A decent Rod Combo for me
Shimano Rod Saragossa 8000
Shimano Rod Sentire Stealth series model number 691 pelagic P-6
Spooled the real exposed with 40 pound Daiwa 8x strand Braid.
I’ll rig 2 metres of Leader “mono “ and tie an easy clip with a running sinker. my choice of hooks are early season I like the 187 suicide hooks also known as octopus hooks. I feel these are super super sharp and give me the best opportunity to catch a snapper in winter or early season. as you seen in the video above.

I’d also recommend this tackle anywhere that has fast moving currents or anywhere that has big Stingrays and lots of sharks. it also helps getting the fishing quicker and spending more time fishing for snapper rather than mucking around with unwanted speak fish species

Port Phillip Bay Tackle

In port Phillip Bay I used slightly different tackle. early season I’m generally fishing shallow and I fish mono main line .
My rod combo is
Reel Shimano Baitrunner 6000D
I prefer graphite rods in port Phillip Bay over fibreglass so I’d recommend the same sentire stealth 1 pelagic on the bait runners.
my main line is 12lb-15lb And I like to use green line I don’t really have a favourite brand with mono but I tend to buy Berkeley.
I recommend having four at least four rods out while fishing for snapper in port Phillip Bay that’s the maximum you can fish per person in Victoria.

How To Catch a Early/late Season Snapper in SHALLOW Water - Chapter 1 Port Phillip Bay

A Short video on snapper fishing for early Season snapper in port Phillip bay.

Beginners Guide To Snapper in Port Phillip Bay Chapter 1
G’day, guys. Today I’ll be talking about everything you need. To catch a Port Phillip Bay snapper. In Melbourne.
So, you’ve decided you want to take up fishing. And you don’t know the first thing about catching a snapper. This article is for you.
1st, I’ll talk about what tackle you actually need. I am going to assume that you’re fishing from a boat.
So, when you go to buy your Rod & Reel you know what to buy. snappers are large fish they can get up to 10 kilos in Port Phillip Bay even larger. It’s appropriate to have the right gear. To deal with these fish.
Rod & Reel for Bait.
Fishing Rods coming different sizes and length’s they have also got ratings in Kg, A good weight Rating for snapper is 6-8kg up to 8-10kg. You also got a choice of what your rod is made from fibreglass or graphite. When you are starting out, this is not It’s not something you should worry about too much because you’ve got a lot of things to learn before you need to learn about fibreglass and graphite rods. So, pick one. My Choice is a graphite rod. But a lot of people use fibreglass too. They are both good. I think the rod length should be around 2 metres till 2.1 metres in length. For a boat. That is what I find is best for me. How much money should I spend on my fishing rod? That’s a good question. I tend to try and use mid range fishing rods. I feel. You can get away with cheaper fishing rods for snapper. But it’s a bit different with fishing reels.
When selecting a fishing reel. It’s really important to have smooth drag system. There’s a lot of cheap reels that will lock up. What I mean by locking up is when you are hooked up. And as the snapper runs off with your line. The spool will lock up & Will stop. And Bust the line, & you will lose your fish. So it’s really important to spend a little bit of money. On a good fishing reel. The cheapest one I will use and of used a lot of reels in my time. Is a Shimano Sienna in the Size 4000? Just like fishing rods. They come in different sizes. And the minimum size you want. Probably for a beginner is 5000. You can get away with a Size 4000.

Western Port: Last Week we Fished the top-end of wp. fishing out Corinella boat ramp. We Caught a good range of Fish From gummies, Trevally, Salmon, and Snapper. 6 Reds in total. we managed to get a Video Here it is Below. Below is an image of the top-end of the western port. If you didn't know what I was talking about you can see all the channels.. click here to enlarge the image.     topend western port, I would Hope these snappers hang around for a few more weeks. Throughout the winter Period. If you can get out this week.  I feel you're a good chance fishing the run-in tide. find a channel there is plenty and position yourself on the edge (around 5-7m Deep) as the water flows up these fish are coming up on the mudflats to feed. then running back out to the ocean I feel. The fish we caught were so red like they had just come in from the ocean. Tackle Used we fished a Standard WP Rig with a Reedy's Single UV Circle . UV Sleeve for extra Protection from toothy's. if you don't know how to tie one, I've made a video, sorry it's not the best. I made 5 years ago but it does the job Video Here  GPS Mark, I don't think giving a Gps mark will Help. I have Spoken to Many fisho's & their catching in all different areas But mainly up the top-end of the port. Back yourself and the rewards are so much more satisfying. Bait  Make sure you have some fresh Squid, and always have a smaller rig with whiting hook out catching fresh trevally, Salmon Yakka's like we did in the video. They make the Best Gummy shark bait.

Port Phillip Bay Snapper Squid Whitting Report

Yesterday I was Down the Mornington Pier and Some mates were catching Land-based snapper. with the big wind, the snapper came into shallow water, for the next few months as they slowly head south out of port Phillip Bay. into the warmer waters of the ocean. for the next month or two, (until the Bay water Temp is Colder than offshore water Temp) some Areas you would like to try. Fish a Runout tide is around 7m of Frankston to Mt Martha all along the coastline try to Anchor up on the edge of a Natural reef, I find them with my Lowrance side scan. it seems the reds are leaving shallow this Year. People think you need Big winds to catch reds in shallow. That's not true. snapper can turn up anywhere at any time. Bait- Fresh Squid is the Go this time of year, it's Soft or Small Pilchard Chunks. Back your Self and Try Ethier 7m coastline or Superwide of Mornington 21m Plus.

Garfish Have Moved into the Local Pier's Frankston, Mornington & Even Mordy. Bait Live Maggots & Silverfish. Squid - the big dogs will be around, it's been great the last few months of Frankston & Mornington easily catching your bag. Anyday Mud island will start to fire. Whitting is still getting smashed over in st Leonards's, I went a few weeks ago and we got 40 fish no worries. It's very important to fish the run-in tide fishies the best. the Runout is better on this Side of the bay, Rye, Sorrento, etc. try to fish 3m to 7m deep. I feel the chance increase around early morning / of afternoon sunset. Look for sand holes and fish them, seriously it's super easy once you get it right. Thanks, guy's and I hope you have a great week fishing!!! if you like this Report let me know in the comments below.  Please forgive my grammar it's not the best.😅 [wpdiscuz-feedback id="3emzc8vao1" question="Please leave a feedback on this" opened="0"][/wpdiscuz-feedback]

Snapper 🎣 Melboune's Port Phillip Add % To improve Your CATCH rate - Ree...

Fishing Melbounre For Snapper in Port Phillip Bay . It's been a Stella Week Reedy's Rigs Show's a Few thing's  to improve Your Fishing if your a beginner.
In this Video all fish were Caught on the 187 Hooks or ULTRA Rig. Hope this video help's the new Guy's to Catching a Red.
There is no best snapper rig in port Phillip Bay.  My name is Brett  as I’m the owner of Reedy’s Rigs it’s literally my job to know what rigs work best in port Phillip Bay. this is what I’ve done for the last 10 years of my life target snapper ALL Year Round in port Phillip Bay . Today I’ll share that some information with you about rigs.  Below is a Video of Me Tying Rigs & Also Catching Snapper.

fishing hook , lumo hook , reedys hooks , domintor hooksUnweighted Fly Rig
The first rig I use is Unweighted fly rigged on a Reedy’s Rig single circle Hook 4/0 . In Port Phillip Bay there is lots off shallow reefs. Normally its very snaggy Country so using twin Hooks is probably not ideal. I prefer the circle hook on this rig, Only Because they do not seem to get snagged as much. The unweighted fly will just give it that 10% attracting power and is also possible to catch a red with no bait. This rig is great early season when the fish are in shallow. I use 20/40-pound leader. I connect it to the main line with a double uni knot or a Swivel if I plan to head deeper later.
Early season when the fish go shallow is when I fish this rig most . The type’s of area’s such as Black Rock, Altona,  Elwood, Frankston, Brighton ,Sandringham Mornington , Mount Eliza ,Basically anywhere with heavy reef .

Snell Twin Hook Rig
The Snell Rig probably port Phillip bay’smost used rig. Great for most parts of the bay. I use size 4/0 187 Hooks (octopus Style) you can catch big fish on small hooks. it’s harder to catch small fish on big hooks. Let’s face it not every snapper is going to be a huge one. A 2Kg 3Kg fish are still good fish but would be better suited to 4/0 size hooks. I like my Snell rigs to have fixed hooks to help with penetration when hooking the fish. So, there’s always been a lot of talk about unweighted and weighted on the Snell rigs, If you can get away with unweighted use an unweighted rig. but in my boat I’m always fishing at least four rods or normally 8 so to keep those rods in an even spread so they’re not tangling up with each other, I Use size 1 Ball Sinker. It will keep that all in order so that’s why I use the sinker. This rig is great for full Bait’s such as pilchards, Silver Whiting ,squid heads etc.

Snell Rig, Twin Hook Rig, Reedys Rig, Best Snapper Rig

midnight , ultra rig, snapper rig, reef rig, Dropper Rig, paternoster , diagram fishing rigReedy’s Rigs Ultra Rig Tied On Paternoster
Reedy’s rigs Ultra-Rigs are the Best Pre-tied Paternoster rig on the market. there is no expense spared on the rig. I use paternoster rigs anytime when I’m fishing Snell rigs which is most of the time. Is probably my favourite rig to be honest. I Find my Biggest fish of the year is normally caught on this Rig. Using fresh squid strips or rings is fantastic. But I like a silver whiting head Pinned through the nose. With circle hooks you want use the next size up Hook ,than what you’d use generally speaking it’s a size up so if you use normally used size 4/0 then use a  5/0 hook, if you size 6/0 Buy 7/0 Etc.
